Numbers are Important-

-Mrs Kashmira Rodrigues
 Don Bosco High School,
Matunga, Mumbai
29 August 2015.

The students of Std III observed Numbers are Important Day on the 26th of August. The classrooms were decorated in keeping with the theme. A discussion  was held where the children were made to understand how and why numbers play an important role in our everyday life. Before numbers were invented people used pebbles and stones for counting. Later on people counted on their fingers .Even today the system of counting from one to ten using fingers is popular in most countries. In fact the decimal system was inspired by our ten digits (fingers). Individual numbers are therefore called digits. The invention of zero by Aryabhatt made the difficult calculations easy. Indians used the concept of zero for the first time and in turn the Arabs who learnt it from India introduced the concept to the western world.

The students were made familiar with numbers in a few other languages. During the course of the day the work done was all co-related to numbers. The students solved interesting worksheets and viewed a power point presentation. Through the various activities conducted the students learnt numbers are unavoidable in one’s life. Without numbers there would be no science, no music and no art. The children really enjoyed the various activities conducted and learning outcomes were achieved.

Assembly IX E

Don Bosco High School.
Matunga, Mumbai
26 August 2015
The IX E class presented a meaningful and well executed  assembly highlighting children's ability to act as agents of change. The  assembly focussed on the life of Craig Kielburger, a child rights activist  who was just in the Seventh grade when he was inspired to become an advocate to fight for the rights of children. Craig in turn was inspired by Iqbal Masih a Pakistani child who was a child rights activist at the age of  twelve. He was shot dead because of his influence over the 3000 Pakistani  children who escaped from their torturers with Iqbal’s help. This assembly  strongly brought out a thought that even as children, they can bring about  a positive change by doing ordinary things extraordinarily.

The students of std III went on a field trip to the Taraporewala Aquarium today, ie 27th August, 2015. This field trip was organised for the children to supplement their lesson in EVS on living and non living things. Along with their cap, water  bottle, snacks,  etc, they were  also informed to carry a note book and pencil, to jot down whatever they observed. Each class was accompanied by their respective class teacher and two parents.

The students were fascinated to see the different kinds of colourful fresh water and tropical fish of different shapes and sizes on  display there, and very eagerly began writing down the names and information provided on each fish.

All in all, it was a very exciting day for our students.

Bosco’s Talent Fest, the ‘Kala Utsav’ a grand success

-Ms Ashwini Gupte

Don Bosco High School,
Matunga, Mumbai
22 August 2015

Annual festival, spelt two days, August 21 and 22, of fun, creativity and learning. We witnessed a slew of events, both group and individual, that brought talent to the fore and fetched the children House Points. We also focused on events intended to help the students improve in their academic performance.

The uniqueness of this year’s Bosco Kala Utsav was the Student Council, along with the working committee, who took charge of the entire programme, right from the planning stage to the implementation, with minimal intervention on the part of the teachers.

To provide a bird’s eye view, the Utsav included the English Elocution, the Debates, the Choral Recitation, the Mental Floss Essay Writing event, Mono Acting, the Unique Talent event, a quiz, a handwriting event, word search and Sudoku puzzles, an art event and the much-loved Vocals event. As part of sustained efforts to inculcate the reading habit in our students, a ‘Readathon’ event was organized, wherein each student was encouraged to read a book of his choice in class. A spelling bee aimed not only at improving spelling, but also at building vocabulary. Students made colourful and creative displays for their classrooms.
A feedback was given on the days’ events, on what went well and how to better the programme in the forthcoming year. Finally, the boys viewed two short films on Don Bosco.
Kudos to the Student Council and the members of the working committee for a job well done and congratulations to the winners of the various competitions!
